Our Confirmation ministry is to help young adolescents begin to develop an adult faith. This means two things. First, as their developmental task is to identify themselves apart from their parents, they need to embrace the Christian faith for their own, and no longer only because it is their parents’ faith. Second, most adult Lutherans find that this thorough training in doctrine is the foundation of their understanding of faith for life. In many ways, it is like school. There is teaching and reading and homework and exercises and quizzes. There is material to know and understand: · Ten Commandments · Apostles’ Creed · Lord’s Prayer · Baptism · Keys · Lord’s Supper · Basic Bible content. In another way, it is not like school at all. For this material is the most important material for life. So, while it is critical to know it, knowing is not enough. One must believe it and live by it. For that reason there is encouragement and exercises that are unlike school, but are about believing and living. Most students are in 7th and 8th grade. Classes take place after school on Wednesdays during the school year, September through March. Instruction is completed in the fall of 9th grade. Student Comments
- I have learned many things while in Catechism class, including the Ten Commandments. I think knowing the Ten Commandments will lead my life in a straighter path. They have really inspired me to do more things for others and not focus so much on myself. I have learned that If people are picking on others or hurting me, what to do in the most humane manner instead of threats or harmful words. I have been in less fight with classmates since I have learned them. - I have lots of fun and have made new friends so far. I have to admit its difficult with the homework from school and catechism class but I know its all worth it in the end.
Foul Weather Cancellation Our basic rule is that if the public schools meet at the end of the day (no cancellation or early departure) then Catechism meets. If in doubt, call the parish office (787.3187)
